Weekly roundup - 7 February 2025
We have been learning about Chinese New Year for the last two weeks, this has included:
- Chinese New Year Fun: Exploring Culture and Traditions
- Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in China. This year, we’re welcoming the Year of the Snake!
Here’s how we have celebrated:
- Learning About the Zodiac: The children have learned about the Chinese zodiac and discovered which animal represents the year they were born. Each year has its own unique characteristics.
- Crafts & Decorations: Children have created Chinese Lanterns and other colourful decorations. These crafts have brightened our classrooms and give children the chance to develop fine motor skills.
- Tasting Traditional Foods: We have introduced children to Chinese New Year foods such as noodles, Bak Choy and chopsticks. The children have had the opportunity to learn about the significance of these foods.
- Fortune cookies: Each child has taken home a fortune cookie, these symbolise luck, wisdom, fate, and all that is unknown.
We were lucky enough to welcome in one of our Parents Michelle last Thursday to talk to us about her knowledge of Chinese New Year. She told us a traditional tale which included why they use the colour red to celebrate and make loud noises. She also shared with us her Character symbol. She explained that children can use their fingers to practice the symbols, or colour them in to support their fine motor skills and literacy awareness.
This week we are focusing on the theme Friendship and Kindness, and our book of the week is ‘Duck and Penguin are NOT friends’
