Weekly roundup 20 January 2023

It's been a cold week for us all at Pre-School but thankfully the weather doesn't seem to dull the children's spirits. Both rooms have continued exploring the theme of People Who Help Us with Honey's really enjoying the story of Alice's Wonderful Hospital Adventure. They also looked at a range of books featuring different occupations including one about builders. This book was enjoyed by some of the children as they pointed out the different tools they could see. They then looked around the room for objects that were featured in the book, for example, two traffic cones and three spanners. Extending a simple reading activity by introducing props helps consolidate children's learning by allowing them to explore the real versions of items they have learned about in the story. 

Bumbles have had a few visits this week from a range of people talking about their jobs. James came in and spoke to the children about his job working for the Ambulance service. He also read them a story which was enjoyed by all. Kayleigh (Keira’s sister) returned to the setting after a visit to Honeys last year and shared the details of her position as a veterinary nurse. She brought in her stethoscope and the children were keen to explore how it worked. Some of the children asked about the different types of animals heartbeats and how they sounded. It continued to be a family affair with Tracy the postal worker (Keira's Mum!) coming in to talk about her job at Royal Mail. She explained the process of how letters get sorted and posted and even brought in some real stamps and envelopes for the children to write their own. Some were still thinking about their recent lists for Father Christmas so it's likely they'll be getting their requests in earlier this year!

This weekend sees the start of the celebrations for Chinese New Year. We've already decorated the foyer area with some of the children helping to unpack the resources. It was difficult to stop them trying to eat the fortune cookies! Next week we'll be continuing celebrations with more activities and food tastings. 

Our books next week will be celebrating diversity and are called "We All Belong" and "Celebrations Around the World".
