Weekly roundup 27 February 2026

This week we have started exploring our new theme of gardening and growing. The children have been observing nature outside, looking closely at worms and talking about what plants need to grow. We have also been reading Jack and the Beanstalk, which inspired us to build our very own beanstalk — the children decided it simply had to be taller than Sunita!

As part of our learning about nature, we have also made our own bird feeders. The children mixed lard and bird seed together, then carefully pressed the mixture onto a variety of natural materials, including pine cones. They used string to hang them up outside. We are looking forward to observing next week to see whether the birds have enjoyed their tasty treat!

In Bumbles, the children have also been busy exploring activities linked to Chinese New Year. They have been looking at the Chinese alphabet, practising mark-making inspired by the characters, and taking part in sensory tray activities to explore different textures and materials. We have also been learning about the Lunar New Year and talking about the Year of the Horse, discussing what this means within the Chinese zodiac.

Looking ahead to next week, we will begin preparing our garden area ready for sowing seeds. The children will help to get the soil ready and learn about what plants need to grow. We will also be planting our very own beanstalks and watching carefully to see how they change over time. Our book of the week will be The Tiny Seed, which will support our learning about growth and the life cycle of plants.

Please see the attached poster regarding the ‘Starting Reception’ event at Galleywood Infant School on Tuesday 24th March from 4.30–6.00pm. This session will offer advice and top tips to help support your child with starting school in September 2026.

A gentle reminder that our session times are 9.00-12.00 and 12.00-3.00. We have recently had some children arriving throughout the morning. If your child will be arriving later than the session start time, please let us know in advance by emailing springfieldbees@hotmail.co.uk or calling 01245 264110. This really helps us with planning the day and organising activities.

If your child is absent or running late, please also inform us by phone or email. In line with our safeguarding policy, we are required to make contact with families and record a reason for absence. If we have not heard from you, we will need to get in touch, which takes staff away from the room.

We have been informed today of one confirmed case of chicken pox in the Bumbles room. Please look out for symptoms such as an itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters, a high temperature, or cold-like symptoms. If you suspect your child has chicken pox, please keep them at home and inform us. Children can usually return once all spots have crusted over.

Finally, a reminder to please return funding forms and parent surveys as soon as possible.
