Weekly roundup 24 February 2023

This week both rooms have embraced the onset of Spring and enjoyed the slightly warmer weather. The Bumbles have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk and The Tiny Seed, both featuring plants and how they grow from small seeds into something completely different. The Honeys also read the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk which was very popular. The children spoke about the chicken that lays golden eggs during circle time. Honeys and Bumbles have been inspired by both stories and planted their own seeds. Please let us know how the beans and seedlings get on at home and upload your pictures to Tapestry so we can compare the size and speed of growth! We have kept some beans on the front desk so the children can observe them grow and learn about the concepts of growth and change with natural materials.

Shrove Tuesday was popular with everyone as always and for snack the children enjoyed making choices about which toppings to have on their pancakes. Strawberries, grapes, bananas and syrup were particularly popular! The children made their own versions during craft time, cutting and sticking their favourite toppings and talking about how they taste “that’s yummy” “I love banana” “I don’t like berries”. Pancake races were enjoyed outside by all!

As the children get older and more confident they are often compelled to engage in rough and tumble play. This type of play includes running, chasing, wrestling, climbing, rolling, spinning and falling and often involves contact with other objects or people. If boundaries are clear about no-one getting hurt and participants freely choosing to engage in these activities there are many benefits to be gained. Children learn social skills by understanding what is acceptable and how to treat others respectfully. They exert energy and develop spatial awareness which contribute to a less disruptive environment. Any rough and tumble play at Pre-School is closely supervised by staff who have experience and confidence with supporting this type of play.

We're very glad to welcome Anna back this week who will be working in the Bumbles Room. She has been getting to know her Key Children and is keen to support them and build strong relationships with families. Feel free to pop in at drop off if you would like to meet her.  
We're very sad to say that Debbie T will be leaving the setting to embark on a different career path. Debbie has been with Springfield Bees for over five years and has contributed greatly to its growth and presence in the local community. Debbie's last day will be the 21st March so be prepared for some tears and sad scenes from all of the staff and families. 

A quick reminder that the Pre-School is closed next Friday (3rd March) and don't forget tomorrow is our Welly Walk at Pollards Meadow. Hope to see you there!
