Weekly roundup 12 May 2023

Both rooms have continued to follow our theme of the farm and been involved in activities to support this. We've had diggers in the sand and an interesting lotto game where children have to select and match a farm animal if it is called out. Simple turn taking games in small groups helps the children to develop social skills. Three and four year olds are learning how to follow rules and developing their understanding of why they are important. Following steps in a simple game they enjoy helps them to remember rules, eventually without needing an adult to remind them.

Playing in small groups allows the children to listen to others' point of view and develop self control. We've observed some lovely friendships flourishing in the setting with children in Bumbles sharing their All About Me books. If you have not completed your child's All About Me book please do try and add a few photo's of family life and write about what happens at home. They are a great tool for when children are settling and offer comfort and reassurance when shared with their Key Worker. The children tend to take ownership of these books and will often show their friends what they enjoy at home and who is important in their lives.

The warmer weather has been encouraging and the children have enjoyed using their own farming techniques to plant some potatoes and sunflowers. We'll be watching these as they grow and discussing how farmers produce our fruit and vegetables on a large scale.

We've been singing Old MacDonald Had A Farm which is always a favourite and supports children's early literacy skills. Two and three year olds enjoy songs and rhymes as they 'tune in' and pay attention. They will start to join in with songs and rhymes, copying sounds, rhythms, tunes and tempo which then leads to saying some of the words, developing their vocabulary and language comprehension.

After the long weekend the children spoke about the Coronation of King Charles III and what they saw on TV. There was lots of discussion about the new King and the parties that were held in his honour.

It's back to normal this week with a full five days of Pre-School and hopefully, a return to the Weekly Round Up going out on Friday!
